The Origin of Bah Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh is commonly consumed in both Malaysia and Singapore.Bak Kut Teh is believed to be brought in over from Fujian, a person named Lee BoonTeh. He had seven sons who had branched out to set up their own businesses, some of which are now being run by third generation Lees. In Malaysia, the dish is popularly associated with Klang, and locals believed the place to be the origin of bak kut teh.


What is Bah Kut Teh?

Bah Kut Teh is a popular dish served in both Malaysia & Singapore. Direct translation from Hokkien as “meat bone tea”, consists of pork ribs meat simmered in a mixture broth of herbs & spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic) for hours. A strong chinese tea is usually served alongside the dish, in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the fat content consumes in this pork laden dish. Light & dark soy sauce are also added to the soupduring cooking. The dish can be garnished with chopped coriander or green onions and a sprinkler of fried shallots.
